Israel Stories Introduction

As of this entry I have been to Israel three times.  Each time much of the country or at least my own experience of it were very different.

I first went the summer of 1969 on a seven-week tour with the National Federation of Temple Youth (NFTY).  I had just graduated high school and was therefore one of the older, if still dumb, participants.  Needless to say we did quite a bit over seven weeks.

My next trip over was the summer of 1972.  I ostensibly had to get a language credit for my undergraduate degree from MSU, even though the college dropped that requirement while I was there.  I lived in a partially completed condo on French Hill and attended class at Hebrew University’s  French Hill campus.

My next trip was right after graduation from Michigan State University and was a substitute for seeking gainful employment.  I followed my brother George to Kibbutz Maagan Michael on the coast of the Mediterranean.  I attended a work/study Hebrew language program – the Ulpan – and spent my time dealing with breeder stock chickens.

Our last trip over came as a result of finding my quasi-adopted Kibbutz family on FaceBook.  We engaged David Frank of our congregation who is also a bona-fide Israeli tour guide to run around much of the country and spent some additional time in a luxury apartment in downtown Jerusalem.

I hope to return soon and add a few more tidbits to these chapters.
