As is typical, this grand excursion started with Brother George, who pledged to buy me a trip for my 50th birthday. Of course, by the time we went, I was 61, but a wow time regardless. We booked with Hatch Expeditions, an excellent provider of Grand Canyon rafting trips. We were extremely lucky to travel the river with a second 32-foot power raft filled with recently graduated students from LSU and several of their professors from their interdisciplinary course on the Grand Canyon.
This was the luxury way to do the river and, despite the schlepping and hiking I still gained three pounds. (Great cooks!). This was the 28th year the LSU course would end with a 7-day rafting trip through the canyon. We benefited from the extended teaching in real-time in real places.
